A multi-million pound fund to boost green charities could lead to more volunteer opportunities in organisations that promote care of the environment.
This week, Defra, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced the creation of The Greener Living Fund.
‘A new £6 million fund to help charitable and voluntary organisations support and develop environmental projects throughout England’.
According to Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, “Defra is committed to working closely with voluntary and charitable organisations to tackle climate change and help everyone make positive environmental changes in their lifestyle – no matter how big or small. I hope that this fund will make a real difference to individuals, communities and projects across the country and I look forward to seeing the results.’
This will mean that Volunteer Including Organisations such as Look Out Environmental Centre and the Thrive Battersea Garden Project can apply or be part of a larger national project. With extra funding these organisations can expand their operations and the number of volunteers they need and can place.
The Greener Living Fund ‘will offer funding for two years, starting with a bidding phase in 2008 and a main delivery phase running between April 2009 to March 2011’. So next year could bring new opportunities for volunteers who would like to build a career in the area of environment or who would simply like to promote ‘greener lifestyle choices’ in the local community. If this area interests you then contact one of the local green charities and let them know.
Articles for website promoting local businesses
Islington
Did you know...that if you come out of Angel Islington station and turn left, before the traffic lights through an arch you will find and courtyard and there stands a monument to Thomas Paine, son a corset maker. His ‘Rights of Man’, which he wrote above a pub near the Angel in Islington, influenced both the American and French Constitutions. A lesser known fact about Paine is that he smelled so appallingly because of his objection to washing that Thomas Jefferson once refused to allow him into his office.
Other famous residents of Islington include Benjamin Britten, Evelyn Waugh, Nancy Mitford and Joe Orton, who like thousands of other locals and visitors have been drawn to the town by is atmosphere, facilities and location. Over the centuries Islington has provided entertainment and services – at least four hundred years in fact. By 1590 there were already nine pubs along the High Street and Upper Street. In the 1800s it was popular for its wealth of pubs, music halls and theatres. In spite of ups and downs Islington is now a thriving area rich in entertainment venues and shops.
At least by 1601 the first row of ‘shops’ had appeared in Upper Street, in the sense of houses occupied by a range of service providers: a vintner, a shoemaker, a tailor, a glazier a collarmaker, a wheelwright, and a weaver. Surviving sources remind us that these small businesses have a place in history. There are now hundreds of shops here. If you own or manage one of these and want locals and visitors to be reminded that you can provide them with products or services they need now then contact us.
Muswell Hill
Did you know...that from an obscure location down a side-road in Muswell Hill you can enjoy a spectacular view down over North London to Canary Wharf and beyond to two home counties?
Turn off Muswell Hill Broadway down Hillfield Park and on the right of the bridge is a slope of shallow steps leading to what is now part of the Parklands Walk. This follows the line of a now disused railway service that ran from Finsbury Park via Stroud Green and Crouch End to Highgate, with a branch from Highgate via Cranley Gardens and Muswell Hill to Alexandra Palace which opened in 1873.
From the bridge, close to, you can see landmarks of Muswell Hill and Crouch End. Further away you can pick out the towers of Canary Wharf, and, in the distance, Kent and Sussex.
The old railway linked most of the areas now covered by the North London [company’s directory], which links you, the customer, with a host of shops, restaurants and businesses.
